PriceRunner.co.uk's annual Savvy Spender Day was on Friday 19 October 2007, and once again we supported 'savvy spending' by looking into our shopping habits and raising awareness of ways to save money.

We would still love to hear your shopping tips. Why not post you savvy shopping tricks or warn other of a time you have been ripped off so others don’t fall into the same trap. Share your wealth of knowledge with other PriceRunner users.

You can check out the Savvy Spending mini-site at http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/savvyspender

Celia Dixon, Chester:

"Ripped off story...

...For being a long standing Topshop card holder (not advisable) I was sent a new bright pink card to replace my white Topshop card which meant in theory that I would pay less interest.

I went into Topshop to pay my weekly £10 off the bill and asked which card I should be using, was my old card now extinct? Yes was the answer I was given – I was now to pay off the pink card. WRONG! Instead of paying off the interest and money from my bill I added £10 credit to my new card and then was subsequently fined £30 from my old card for missing my payment.

I did phone up customer services to complain but this cost me £10 while I was kept on hold and in the end I gave up. Obviously this fine and my new increase in interest sent my balance up somewhat, and so as a result my Topshop bill spiralled out of control and I can safely say that I will NEVER use that particular store card ever again."

Lisa Hancox, Hampshire:

"I got myself a fantastic deal on my second car – the first I had bought without help from my parents.

I turned on a combination of charm and hard as nails negotiating tactics, and managed to get 10% off the list price, plus free alloys and metallic paint. I was 19 at the time so I think the dealer was expecting me to be naïve – his mistake!

I had previously worked in a finance company, so I knew the extortionate APR rates that some car dealers can charge for car finance. I bargained them down from 16% APR to 6.5% by threatening to walk away from the deal. All in all a complete result!"

If you ever decide to take out a loan; it is more than likely that your bank will try and get you to sign up for Payment Protection on top of the loan, adding a substantial sum to your total repayment.

Though for some I am sure that being able claim if you become unemployed, etc. is of great assistance. But in my personal experience I found the one time I wanted to make a claim due to sickness I was told that the illness I had wasn’t one that they covered even though I had been signed off work by my doctor.

I took out a loan recently, to be paid back over 24 months and saved myself about £1,000 by not taking out any payment protection.

I love loyalty card. I don't mean store cards which give you credit, but the ones that give you points when you spend.

I recently bought myself a pair of hair strighteners wit my Boots points, and because I do most of my food shopping at Sainsubury's it is really hand just before payday to take a few quid off the shopping bill with my Nectar card.

It's like getting paid for shopping! What girl could ask for more?
