Hiya

I need to purchase a basic laptop for my daughter for Christmas. She is a complete techno phobe and will only be using it for the most basic of tasks i.e. word processing (coursework), emailing (very sporadically) but mainly researching using the internet -her digs have wireless broadband.

As this item is likely to be gathering dust, post-graduation, I really want to spend as little as possible. The cheapest laptop on Pricerunner today is an amazing £123 (which is cheap, even to my standards) for a HP nc6320 Celeron M 1.6GHz / 512MB / 60GB / TFT15 / Combo / WinXP Pro.

Can anyone 'in the know' please let me know if I am missing something here - or will this adequately meet her requirements?

Karen

It sounds suspiciously cheap. The price might be wrong, or it might be a second-hand model - in which case the screen will probably break before long anyway.

Laptops start at the very bottom end for about £350. Look at Lenovo for the real bargains, because they are still OK quality.

pricerunner has loads of problems where the prices are out of date or plain wrong. this one is probably one of those. nobody would sell a laptop for £123. if they are then it is either stolen or broke. dont bother with it unless you want to waste £100. save up (or get credit) and get one for about £500.

It's true that occasionally the wrong price gets matched against a product, and where you see this happen, please send an email to info.uk@pricerunner.com. I do agree that £123 sounds suspiciously cheap for a laptop. I think you can pick up a fairly good laptop for £300 to £400 - check out eBay and Dell Outlet for some deals.

Sometimes, they are 'refurbished' which means second-hand, but they are fully functioning and come with a guarantee. If you are buying a refurbished model from eBay, check that the dealer is reputable or the guarantee won't be worth anything.

dell outlet is a rip off - you can get a new laptop with a similar spec for the same price as they list on there. ebay is more of a gamble. lots of good deals, but only if your lucky.
